Yes, you read that right, Google is giving online retailers the chance to advertise their products on Google shopping for free.

Last year was certainly full of surprises and one surprise that felt more than generous was Google offering free shopping ads for retailers during the pandemic.

What is Google Shopping?

For those of you that aren’t up to speed with the different forms of PPC advertising available, Google Shopping Ads are the little image ads highlighting products for sale within the carousel at the top of the search results pages.

You’ll see ‘Ads’ just before the listings to show these are paid adverts.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Google started rolling out an option for retailers to appear in the shopping ads feed for free.

“The retail sector has faced many threats over the years, which have only intensified during the coronavirus pandemic.

With physical stores shuttered, digital commerce has become a lifeline for retailers. And as consumers increasingly shop online, they’re searching not just for essentials but also things like toys, apparel, and home goods. While this presents an opportunity for struggling businesses to reconnect with consumers, many cannot afford to do so at scale.

In light of these challenges, we’re advancing our plans to make it free for merchants to sell on Google.”

The free Google shopping ads were rolled out in the US in Spring 2020. Whereas the rollout for us in the UK didn’t start to happen until the Autumn. This opens up a huge opportunity If you are an online retailer selling physical products on the internet and not already utilising Google Shopping Ads.
